** NEW COURSE**MAKE A SHOPPER STYLE TOTE BAG                                                                                         over 2 weekends on a Combined Leather Technical Skills and Pattern Cutting Course

Learn to make a fully lined Leather Tote Bag with internal letterbox zip pocket, magnetic closure and shoulder length straps. This course teaches you the professional method of Bag Making that you would expect to find at an Italian Workroom but made by you on your own domestic sewing machine. The course is spread over two weekends: the first concentrates on the making of the featured Tote bag using the template pattern designed by the Tutor. The second weekend is devoted to design and pattern cutting where students will learn to transfer a bag design of their own to a set of Master and Working patterns which they can then use after the course to make their very own unique bag using the same construction method learned during the first weekend. The time between weekends will allow students to complete any unfinished work at home; though there may be time available for some finishing to be done during the second weekend.

The skills taught on this course are:

  • Recognising the varying properties of leather and what types to use
  • How to transfer information from a pattern onto leather
  • How to cut leather and how to work with leather tools
  • Testing sample pieces for suitability of backing materials
  • Application of different backing materials
  • Making a professionally finished letterbox zip pocket in bag lining
  • Stabilising leather while stitching
  • Top tips for perfect stitching for industry and couture
  • Making sample pieces of straps
  • Making and attaching straps to bag
  • How to apply suitable hardware
  • How to design for a specific construction method
  • How to make a Master pattern from a design idea
  • Testing designs through mock-ups in card/fabric
  • Extrapolating pattern pieces from Master pattern to make Nett and Working patterns

These workshops will appeal to those who have an aptitude for handmaking though previous experience in sewing or working with leather is not necessary. Students will ideally bring their own sewing machine, however spares can be provided.
